Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography
Published in Hardcover by DIANE Publishing Co (November, 1992)
Authors: Trevor N. Dupuy, Curt Johnson, and David L. Bongard
Average review score:

Indispensable Printed Reference
While studying early greek "Christian Forfathers" and their lives and influences, ALOT of names get mentioned. When such a name is mentioned you think to yourself..: "who is this?", "why did the author mention this person?, what context should I look at this in?" Often times proper understanding behind the names mentioned can be the key that opens the door to context. I bought this book And it's companion
(ISBN: 0062700561) The Harper Encyclopedia of Military History From 3500BC to the Present (from a third party vendor). Niether one have let me down in accuracy or thoroughness. And has repeatedly helped me achieve a more accurate view of history itself as well as how it has been shaped by militarys. A 'must have' for any home library.

Dupuy's Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography
One thing about it, this book and "maybe" another one would replace all those biographies that take up too much room on one's bookshelf (especially mine). I especially like it when a good majority of our nation's military leaders (those on the Joint Chiefs) are included when no other volume even comes close. Great job, Colonel, and also outstanding work, Mr. Johnson

One of the best references
I have studied Military History for quite some time, and have always wanted a "quick reference" book for each figure in history. A lot of times, I will be watching a movie, and they will mention "General whoever" or another figure, and I jump up, grab this book, and read a brief history on the person involved.

This book is excellent in that respect. Do not buy this book for an in depth look at different personalities of military history. However, for a quick reference, this book cannot be beat. It is quite extensive, and seems to be unbiased in it's opinions of the people involved.

If You Love a Bear
Published in Paperback by Walker Books (04 January, 1999)
Author: Piers Harper
Average review score:

Everyone should have a bear to love...
That is the last line of this adorable book, and it does a wonderful job of convincing you that this is the case! My daughter "graduated" from board books w/the hardcover edition of this book at the age of 16 months, and I am sure that she will continue to love it for years to come. The illustrations are very clever--simple enough for a toddler to follow the story and complex enough to discover something new w/each reading. The story is very warm and comforting and is a great book for naptime, bedtime or any time your child needs cuddling!

I Love this book!
I love reading this story to my 4 year old son (my little bear) because it sometimes reminds me of him. He enjoys me reading it to him because he knows it is one of my favourites.

a great book for all ages!
i thoroughly enjoyed hearing this story read at our public library story-hour. it is a great book about a boy and his bear. (reminding me of some of the members of my own family!) a must for everyone's children's libraries!

Little Things Long Remembered: Making Your Children Feel Special Every Day
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (November, 1993)
Authors: Susan Newman and Jennifer Harper
Average review score:

Creating Memories
I had a wonderful time reading through this book and remembering the things my parents did for me. Now I almost always give this book to new parents. In this busy day and age it's easy to forget that the most simple tradition can mean a great deal.

A "must have"!
Every family should own a copy of this book! From now on, I will give every new parent I know a copy of this one. I wish my parents had it when I was growing up. Worth every penny!

Practical, Helpful, A Pleasure to the Eye
This is a great baby shower or new baby gift because parents can refer to it for years and years. The idea ares not crafts and cooking, but doable without alot of fuss and mess. I especially like the way the book is broken into timeframes--things you can do with your child in a minute or two, or five minutes,half-an-hour. I give it all the time. And if I know the new grandparents Igive them Little Things Mean A Lot.

An Inspiration to many
I was recently fortunate enough to hear Joan speak at the ICAN conference in Omaha. She is truly amazing! Hearing her story puts all of the little bumps in my life into perspective. I would recomend this book to anyone!

Joan is a wonderful positive person.
I knew Joan when she was going through her loss of vision. She is a very positive and uplifting person. Her book is true to the experiences we all had with her and her family. You have to read the book and feel that your outlook on life can be just as positive and happy!

Joan is truly a gift to us all.
I had the pleasure of hearing and seeing Joan Brock while at a convention in Oakland, CA in May of 1999. This woman has been through so much, yet still manages to see the good in life and in people. She will inspire you and lift you. The book make my mother cry with joy as she read it. I hope to have the pleasure of reading more books of Joan's should she choose to write them. Thank you Joan for the joy you have added to my life.

The Mountains of Florida: The Art of Dirt

OOohh... dirt!!!!
I love dirt. I love mountains. I love mountains of dirt. And ya know what? I like the book!
All the pictures were really cool, and how many people do you know that take pictures of mounds of construction dirt?
Very cool.

The Mountains of Florida: The Art of Dirt
This book is amazing. Who would have thought that Florida would have such beautiful mountains. I had a friend who reviewed the book (and bought it) and she said it reminded her of home, the Colorado Mountains. This is a great coffee table book and wonderful gift for a friend or family member.

Got Dirt?
What an awesome take on the construction meca of the southeast. The biggest complaint about Florida is how flat it is and how much construction is gowing on. This Author seizes that opportuntity t make lemonade out of a potentially irritating situation. The book was dreamy and extremely imaginative you can get lost in the presentation of dirt. As a dirt lover myself, this book is brilliant and I look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

My Dog Rosie
Published in School & Library Binding by Scholastic (October, 1994)
Authors: Isabelle Harper and Barry Moser

My Dog Rosie is great
I like the paintings that are made from water colors in My Dog Rosie. I also like how the author writes about his own dog. I like books that are not to long and not to short like My Dog Rosie. My Dog Rosie has good descriptions. I like when the author shows you a picture of his own dog. I think anybody will love this book.

Rosie and Isabelle are the best!
My two-year-old daughter, a big fan of dogs, loves this book. It is written in simple language and describes activities to which a two-year-old can relate. The presence of the Grandpa is an added plus! Highly recommended by our whole family.

My Two-Year-Old Loved this Book
My two-year-old loved this book. The story about a little girl who has to take care of a dog is very appealing to young children

A Sacred Primer
Published in Hardcover by Renaissance Books (10 March, 1999)
Author: Elizabeth Harper Neeld
Average review score:

Everyone deserves the fruits of this read!
My husband and I were introduced to A Sacred Primer through a retreat given by Elizabeth Harper Neeld at the Cenacle in Houston Texas. The book comes alive in a very special way when this grounded, gracefilled woman shares her personal experiences of her spiritual practice as well as the experiences of historical and contemporary believers in The Divine. My husband and I are following the example of another couple who are reading the book together in an "allowable" mode. We expect to be surprised as together we read, reflect, and receive. We look forward with anticipation to other works (and retreats)from this gifted scholar.

A Sacred Primer was a joy to read
Elizabeth Harper Neeld's book, A SACRED PRIMER is food for the soul. The book shows the author's understanding of the spiritual and the Divine. The book was filled with refreshing ideas for rejuvinating the soul and the heart. I enjoyed the commentaries at the end of the chapters and I am recommending this book to others.I look forward to more insight from this gifted writer.

I'm already four weeks into my own spiritual practice!
Isn't the proof always in the pudding? After many other attempts over the years, Elizabeth Neeld seems to provided me with what I needed. Combining her own refreshingly real experience with a rich quotations from diverse sources and a multi-faceted format that touched much more than my intellect, I found Sacred Primer to be a fascinating read. But the most wonderful surprise has shown up in my own life -- I'm actually applying what I've read and reaping the benefits already. PS I've already given SP to many family and friends and I hear the same from them.

Shudder
Published in Paperback by Signet (January, 1994)
Author: Brian Harper
Average review score:

Disturbing and gripping thriller.
I've been a fan of Harper's since I read his amazing thriller MORTAL PURSUIT. Over the course of the past couple of years I've hunted down all of his books, most of which are out of print now. SHUDDER was the last on my list and I was delighted to find it in a used bookstore recently. Like his other books, I found myself immediately captivated and carried it with me everywhere I went for three days, reading every chance I got; at lunch, in traffic, on breaks at work. SHUDDER is a disturbing tale of a killer's ghoulish hate for the "ordinary" and psychotic quest for "art". The target of this diseased mind is what society holds most sacred: children. Detective Robert Card goes on the hunt for the killer and finds himself-- and his own son-- entangled in the murderer's web. You'll be gasping out loud at this book, holding on to it like the safety bar on a rollercoaster. Full of twists and turns and brilliant suspense. Highly recommended.

insane
this book is amazing. It's really strange though, and it could be the fact with the children... but I couldn't put this down, i even took it to school with me to read every chance i got. It keeps you turning the pages, especially late at night!

Creepy
I love all of Brian Harper's books, and constantly keep an eye out for a new one. Shudder was more creepy than the rest, however, maybe because little kids were the subject. I would read it again, though, because Harper keeps me glued to each page, and I always end his books with a sigh, wishing they would go on. Other authors which do the same thing for me: Noel Hynd, John Sanford, Patrcia Cornwell. Harper deserves more credit than he receives, and I'd recommend any one of his books to anyone.

Outstanding, Can't Believe This is Out of Print
Received this book from a friend of mine and cannot believe it is out of print. What an oustanding story, compelling, driven, romantic, reflective and thoughtful. Where can I get more books from this author?

I fell in love with Brianda from the first chapter - the author really takes the reader into Brianda's soul!!! Well done!!! Where are more of her books?

Adventuring on Cayman Brac
Published in Paperback by Heel & Toe Pub (November, 2002)
Author: Skip Harper
Average review score:

Has anyone seen my socks?
When it comes to the Brac, I've been going there for well over a decade, and I picked up this book mostly just to have a complete set of references.

And when it comes to guidebooks, I'm usually pretty hard to be impressed. But Skip's comprehensiveness and thoroughness across the full gambit completely knocked my socks off.

The book is a quality piece all the way around: good photo's, excellent maps, and great references: I recognized citations from limited print Cayman Trust publications, including the "Storm of '32" and "Duppies Is"

I'm not a climber, but I am aware that the Brac became a climber's destination in the '90s, although the info had been pretty hard to find...until now. Skip's well organized compilation looks to me to be "The Bible" for Brac-bound climbers.

I am a diver, and his moored sites are covered well enough. The only significant suggestion I can make is that it would have been wonderful if Skip could have gotten permission to reprint the UW topology illustrations originally published in Shlomo Cohen's "Cayman Diver's Guide" (ISBN 965-362-0053), which was last printed in 1990, and not particularly easy to find.

When it comes to shore diving, most diving guidebooks pretty much claim that there is none on the Brac. This is where Skip's book is a goldmine: my shore diving list just flat out doubled, and it looks like I only know of one spot that Skip didn't already have.

Skip also has an excellent reference section, and does a great job in the photo's throughout the book in putting names to local faces.

Overall, this is a great guidebook, a virtual "must" for any Brac traveller who's really interested in the island and who is going to spend time there. It knocked my socks off, but for trips to the Brac, that's a good thing, because its where we get barefoot for a week at a time :-)

-hh

Superior book
I live on the Brac and use this book as a reference. It's a great book. Thank you!

A gem of a book about a gem of an island
WOW! What a beautiful book! Right from the beginning it is clear that this author has experienced all aspects of this island, not just by looking around, but by living it. It is quite obvious that he has actually been suspended from the climbing rocks he describes and has gone scuba diving in the ocean surrounding Cayman Brac to share the breathtaking sea life around the island. He has personally explored the caves and hiked the trails on the island for years. He definitely knows his subject and takes great pride and affection in sharing his knowledge and love of Cayman Brac with those who are lucky enough to find this book.

This is an informative guide that is also a pleasure to look at. After reading this book, I'm ready to hop on a plane and head straight for Cayman Brac!!!
